About natural gas reforms in Ukraine

The statements about the reform of NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine recently made by the Ukrainian leadership, against the backdrop of fresh tension in gas talks with Russia, unfortunately do not allow anyone to draw any conclusions about the consistency of the taken steps. At the same time, the delay in reform of the gas sector is creating serious problems for Ukraine’s energy and economic security. Ukraine’s membership of the energy community it joined lately could serve as a good platform for action.

However, while introducing standards from EU energy legislation, Ukraine should keep in mind that their introduction in Europe itself is not an easy process. What is more, many norms and principles are quite flexible and require thorough work in order to find tools and instruments that closely match the existing conditions and interests of Ukraine.
