Topic Of The Week
UKRAINIAN ENERGY PHENOMENA
The topic of energy saving and efficiency has been gaining popularity in Ukrainian society in recent years, especially when gas issues with Russia raise their heads. This is a topic for discussion not only for experts — interest is also shown by government officials and the Ukrainian media. What has the state done to address it? What innovations have been drawn up by the officials who are responsible for this?

DANIEL YERGIN – THE TRUMPET OF THE ENERGY AND COAL INDUSTRY MINISTRY
Gazprom’s intransigence on the price issue is forcing the Ukrainian authorities to improvise. Ukrainian Energy Minister Yuriy Boiko has already listed three ways to replace Russian gas in Ukraine’s energy stocks. The findings of a study by IHS CERA [headed by expert Daniel Yergin], which has revealed a significant potential to increase domestic natural gas production, were also meant for the attention of the leadership of the Russian monopoly.

LAWS REQUIRE OBSERVANCE
As Terminal has learned, law enforcement officers last year initiated a criminal case against a top manager from Zakhid-Nafta. The businessman is accused of illegally producing light oil products. FREUD-STYLE CAMPAIGN
The recipe for a good campaign is simple … and in January 2012 it looks like this: find a reason to blame Iran for the problems of Europe and the United States, and then the markets will start pulling macroeconomic indicators up for growth. The direction will hardly be changed either by forecasts from OPEC and the International Energy Agency predicting a decline in petroleum consumption, or ones from the World Bank noting the slowdown of global economic growth, or by the attempts made by Standard & Poor’s to review sovereign ratings in Europe, or by U.S. debt problems.
EXCISE GROWTH VS. PETROL PRICE DECLINE
According to economic forecasts made by the Psyche Center on the basis of its regressive analytical model, major brands of fuel may go down in price somewhat this week. The average retail price of A-92 and A-95 petrol to DSTU 4063:2001 standards and winter-type 0.2-62 diesel fuel to DSTU 3868-99 standards will be UAH 9.96, UAH 10.20 and UAH 9.63 per liter respectively. The price of propane-butane will drop to UAH 5.74 UAH per liter.

ECONOMISTS ARE TO JUDGE
Last week, the Ukrainian media continued discussions entitled «Should the domestic producer be supported?,» which restarted after December’s decision by the Interdepartmental Commission on International Trade, which found that the imports of fuel pose no threat to the national interests of our country.
